Doctors Without Borders

The magnitude 7.2 earthquake that struck the southern region of Haiti on Saturday, August 14th has wreaked havoc in Haiti. As of August 22ndUSA Today is reporting that the death toll has risen to 2,207 with more than 344 people still missing, 12,268 people injured and nearly 53,000 houses destroyed. On top of this Tropical Storm Grace also affected Haiti causing drenching rains just days after the powerful earthquake. It was a sad sight to see. The storm hit as thousands of Haitians dug through rubble looking for their loved ones. Hospitals were quickly overwhelmed and relief efforts have greatly suffered.

In spite of all this, we have also seen a lot of people come together to help their families, loved ones, neighbors. We have seen organizations showing up and helping in a great time of need. In our previous blog (click here to read) we talked about ways to donate to Haiti. On this blog, we’d like to mention an organization that is very dear to our hearts, Doctors Without Borders/Médecins Sans Frontières.

MSF has been bringing in to Haiti emergency staff, medical teams, and water/sanitation experts. They have been providing support to hospitals with medical supplies and human resources, something much need since over 12,000 have been injured. They have also been looking to find ways to access areas cut off from aid due to landslides. According to their site, they are preparing to send approximately 100 tons of medical and relief supplies to Haiti this weekend.

The work Doctors Without Borders have done is not only incredible and awe-inspiring, but also necessary and life-saving. However, they do need help to keep going! If you have the time, we recommend reading this article to see all the life-saving work they have and continue to provide to Haiti. Not all of us have the ability to travel to Haiti and help first-hand, but we do all have the power to support those who are fighting this fight through our donations.
