Music groups from Otavalo, known as conjuntos, have been instrumental (pun intended) in establishing the traditional Andean sound as a force in the world music scene. Generally the men play percussion and wind instruments, as well as Western stringed instruments. Men and women sing traditional songs, both in Quechua and Spanish.
Men wear blue ponchos (ruwanas) and mid-calf-length white pants (calzones), with their hair braided (shimba) beneath felt hats (sombreros). Men and Women wear alpargatas, sandals made from the fibre of the penko cactus.
