Celtic Claddagh
Handcrafted Haitian Metal Art, Celtic Claddagh Ring of Eternity with Birds
By Brutus Wiseton
The Claddagh ring is named after its birthplace in Claddagh, Ireland. According to legend, a man named Richard Joyce was supposed to be married to his true love. Before the wedding took place, however, he was kidnapped by pirates and sold into slavery, where he worked for a goldsmith and learned to design jewelry. He created a ring with hands cradling a crowned heart in the hope that he could one day escape and be reunited with his lady love. Eventually, Richard did win his freedom and he returned to find his betrothed. He gave her the Claddagh ring and the they were wed at once. And yes, they lived happily ever after!
