Product Description
When Columbus was exploring the New World, he became aware of a tradition in the Caribbean of placing a pineapple at the entrance of a native settlement to indicate that visitors were welcome. Upon his return to the courts of Europe, he explained its meaning as he shared the exotic fruit with heads of state. Completely taken by the flavor of the fruit and by Columbus' stories, Europeans were eager to acquire their own. However, because of the difficulties of transporting the fruit from the West Indies or actually cultivating it in the Northern climates, to have a pineapple and offer to share it was the ultimate gesture of generosity and hospitality.
This three-dimensional metal version, hand-crafted in the Caribbean country of Haiti, elegantly conveys that very message. Made from recycled steel and weather-coated, it is suitable to signal your welcome indoors or out.
