Artist Bio
Rodrigo Canil
Rodrigo Canil is not only a well-known sculpturist, but also a father to a 3-year-old son and one of 9 siblings. When he was 7 years old, his father died. Like a lot of children who like to follow in their parent’s footsteps, Rodrigo began working with wood at the age of 15. He started his Santero career by creating nativity sets. Woodworking is hard labor, and doesn’t pay much, but as he continued, his work gradually became getting popular, tourists loved his work, and he started getting larger orders. Now, he manages a team of 14 young artists, the majority students, who work during the day and go to school at night. He is now best known for creating beautiful, colorful masks, animals, and nativities. Definitely an example of how hard work and dedication pay off.
